Dr. Ronald W. Garner, Superintendent

Dear Spartanburg District One Students, Parents, Families, and Communities:

Fall is an exciting time of transition and change.  In Spartanburg One, we welcome the chance to maintain our strong tradition of excellence and to seek ways which will prepare our students for the world of post-secondary opportunities.

One way we are preparing students for their world beyond high school is through a series of focused, targeted educational measures.  Each step is designed to place graduates into career and college opportunities. We have worked to provide aligned opportunities through the expansion of high school credit courses into middle school.  With this initiative, students will receive the instruction they need to meet grade-specific standards, and also receive the preparation needed to earn high school credits while still in middle school.

Educational opportunities continue to expand for our academic fine arts.  Through partnerships with local, state, and national organizations, students have real experiences in theatre, art, dance, music, and creative writing.  During October, students at each school in our district will be experiencing the arts through visiting artists, shared studio installations, and multiple concerts and competitions.  Dance and theatre students will also have opportunities to showcase their emerging skills.

Assessment results from the spring of 2018 have been received in each school.  Teams of administrators, district personnel, teachers, and other support staff have used the past two months to analyze data trends - identifying strengths and growth areas at each assessed level.  At the present time, we are preparing each student for a spring assessment which reflects the standards and goals seen in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. Students in grades 3-8 will take the SC Ready assessment (math and ELA) and the PASS assessment (social studies and science).  Likewise, students in grade 11 will take the ACT and WorkKeys assessment.

Involvement in community is part of our traditional community here in Spartanburg One. This fall our school communities will participate in a district-wide food collection campaign.  We once again will celebrate our veterans with activities during Veteran’s Day week, which will include preparing Christmas cards for those serving our country. My heart fills with pride as I watch our students collect and share their blessings with others who have a greater need.

No update would be complete without a special thank you to the Board of Trustees of District One.  Each day they support and sustain the vision of a “quality, student-centered education” for every child in Spartanburg One.  I also want to thank each of you for supporting your child’s efforts in school and for your support of our district.

I look forward to the exciting opportunities which await each student in Spartanburg One throughout this fall season!
